Nintendo Wii Outsells Sony PS3 »
Not good news for Sony. I would have thought that with all of the violence surrounding PS3 sales, that they would have been top-dog. However, in the US in November, Wii sales more than doubled those of the PlayStation 3.
Nintendo sold 476,140 Wii consoles in the U.S. in November and Sony only scrounged up a disappointing 196,580 sales of the PS3.
It turns out that the both are still behind the Xbox 360 from Microsoft. That thing has been out for a year, so I also would not have thought that it’s sales would have been that high. In November in the US, Microsoft sold 511,300 Xbox 360 consoles.
In all fairness, the Wii and the PS3 were not available for sale until halfway through the month, so the numbers may be a little misleading when compared to the Xbox 360 numbers.
Sony needed a big hit with the PS3, but I do not think that they have it yet. The new PS3 will not play some of the older PS2 games. They have had manufacturing problems which have reduced the number of PlayStation 3 systems available for U.S. and Japan launches, and these problems prompted Sony to postpone next year’s European debut of the console (sorry mates
).
Nintendo, on the other hand, seems to be ready. The Wii consoles went very quickly when it went on sale in Europe. That is more bad news for Sony, I think. Although, maybe this will give them some time to develop some PS3 Self-defense classes which potential European buyers can take.
Apple Game Console? »
According to ExtremeTech, some guy named Jesse Tortora from Prudential speculates that Apple could be preparing to enter the game console market. He says it is a possibility because Apple:
recently announced the availability of videogames for its iPod through its iTunes store. The game console device could be morphed out of some combination of the MacMini and iTV, while the handheld player could be developed as an enhancement for a future version of the widescreen iPod.”
Mmmmmm, yummy. Wouldn’t that be sweet! Now THAT is something I would wait in line for (although I don’t know that I would actually shoot anyone or offer up my child in exchange).
Nintendo Wii – yawn. Sony PS3 – costs too much. Xbox – not bad, but doesn’t have all my favorite games – sigh. But Apple graphics – score!
Sony PlayStation 3 and Older Games »
With Sony getting their…um…hat handed to them in the flat panel TV market, computers and portable music players, they are desperate for a big hit with the new PlayStation 3. But, alas, there could be a snag.
Quietly, Sony, in a low, hushed voice, acknowledged that a couple of the games designed for PS2s and PS1s may not work quite exactly perfectly on the new PlayStation 3. Well, ok, maybe more like a few of these games won’t quite play correctly. Alright, alright, let’s just call it an even 8,000. 8,000 older-generation games won’t work correctly on the new PlayStation 3 — even though the PlayStation 3 was billed as being fully compatible with older-generation games.
Ahh…hello. This would have been nice to know a little more in advance of Friday’s Playstation 3 release. I would think that they knew that this was a potential snag. C’mon…you guys need a hit here! Some games actually won’t work at all!
Microsoft Xbox 360, which debuted last year, has had similar problems with older games, so this is not unprecedented.
All-in-all, the PS3 should grab a big market share, so this probably will not be a major hurdle to its success. They have been gobbled up in Japan and, come Friday, that will probably be the case in the US.
Sony Playstation 3 Games »
Sony has released a nice set of Playstation 3 games that will be offered starting in November. Here is a list of games that they have so far:
- Resistance: Fall of Man
- NBA 07
- Genji: Days of the Blade
- Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII – Ubisoft
- Call of Duty3 – Activision
- EA Sports Fight Night Round 3 – Electronic Arts
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Bethesda Softworks
- F.E.A.R. – Vivendi Universal Games
- Full Auto2: Battlelines – Sega
- Madden NFL 07 – Electronic Arts
- MARVEL:ULTIMATE ALLIANCE – Activision
- Mobile Suit Gundam: CROSSFIRE – NAMCO BANDAI Games
- NBA 2K7 – 2K Sports
- Need For Speed Carbon – Electronic Arts
- NHL 2K7 – 2K Sports
- RIDGE RACER 7 – NAMCO BANDAI Games
- Sonic the Hedgehog – Sega
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 – Electronic Arts
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas – Ubisoft
- Tony Hawk’s Project 8 – Activision
- Untold Legends Dark Kingdom – Sony Online Entertainment
Some feel that the Sony Playstation 3 is overpriced. A full blown PS3 will cost around $700. But Sony has started a nice list of games and that will probably not be as big an issue once the ads start showing up. So, if you know a kid that has a Sony Playstation 3 and a Sony Mylo, his parents just spent about a grand.
Best Buy also has PS3 games for pre-order »
from engadget

What, you thought Best Buy liked Nintendo better than Sony? Never one to play favorites (except to customers who buy those shady warranties), the big-box retail giant has also put some tantalizing PS3 titles up for pre-order to join the Wii games we saw the other day. Like the Wii listings, the PS3 titles also cite December 1st as a release date — probably just a placeholder — although the $60 prices are more in line with Xbox 360 games than the $50 Nintendo will be charging for its discs. Among the nine titles online are classic franchise sequels such as Resident Evil 5, Tekken 6, and Devil May Cry 4, along with Indiana Jones, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007, but the lack of details or screenshots on Best Buy’s site means you’re better off skipping the Read link and heading straight over to Joystiq if you have any interest in these games.
