Make 71 Million Dollars In a Weekend »

How would you like to do that? Well, that is what the Simpson’s Movie did this past weekend. Granted, I am sure A LOT more than that was spent on creating the movie. But, the Simpson’s Movie had the 5th best movie opening this year.

As Li points out in her Search Marketing Gurus post today, the producers say their viral-marketing campaign was a major contributor to the movie’s success. My favorite facet of their marketing campaign is the Simpsonize Me web site, where you can re-create yourself as a Simpsons character. That is a riot.

So, why am I posting about this on the blog? It further establishes the Internet as the #1 marketing tool today. Where else could one expect to generate as much “buzz” about their product? Newspapers? Magazines? TV? Nope. Nothing gets the results of a well orchestrated marketing campaign centered around the Internet.

If you have something to advertise and are not taking advantage of the power of the Internet, you are really missing out. If you don’t believe me, check out this story from the Associated Press detailing how newspapers are losing the real estate advertising market to online advertisers.

Wikia Acquires Grub Web Crawler »

wikia searchWikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is serious about taking on Google and Yahoo in the Search Engine market.

Earlier this year in Tokyo, Wales shed a little more light on his goal. He plans on creating an open-source, human-powered Search Engine. This stands in contrast to the standard “robot” powered Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Friday, Wales announced that Wikia had taken the next step with the acquisition of Grub for use as their web crawler.

He feels that he can take about 5 percent of the Internet search market with Wikia (formerly, some called Wikiasari) and is planning on a public version of the site toward the end of this year.

Volunteer human-editors would help sort out search terms which have more than one possible meaning. One example given was the term “Palm”. If one searches for that, are they looking for information on the handheld computer, the tropical tree or the inside part of the hand?

I think that Wales has a good idea in that he wants to make it more difficult to spam the Search Engines in order to rank higher AND he wants to empower the actual content publishers as opposed to the search companies, as it stands currently.

The way it is now, if one knows how to manipulate the Search Engine to their advantage, they can get their content to rank higher than others, even if the other content is of better quality or more relevant. A human-edited search engine would eliminate that ability, in theory.

New Google Tag Coming Soon »

Jill Whalen from HighRankings reports that Google’s Dan Crow announced a new META tag named “unavailable_after” which Google will be using soon.

When the new “unavailable_after” tag is used on a web site page, it will notify Googlebot when that particular page should no longer be crawled. Particularly effective for Limited Time offer pages of a web site or a page that is promoting an upcoming event.

Jill mentions another great way that one could possibly use this tag:

perhaps you write articles that are free for a particular amount of time, but then get moved to a paid-subscription area of your site.

I am sure that the will be much more Internet chatter about this new META tag and other possible ways it could be used, so stay tuned.

Google PageRank Update »

Here we go again. It is that time of year when SEO geeks all over the world start getting giddy in anticipation of the upcoming Google Pagerank update.

We have posted on Google Pagerank before and what was said then still applies, so there is no point in rehashing. In fact, the only reason I am even mentioning pagerank now is due to a post I read on Dean Hunt’s site entitled Say No To Pagerank, Yes to Life.

Surely people have better things to do than spend hours in forums discussing a little green bar? Aren’t we all tired of this by now? We should just focus on improving our businesses and the rest will take care of itself.

Amen to that. Create some good content. Get some readers. Get some backlinks. Repeat that simple process. Pagerank takes care of itself.

Dean has also started a list of other webmasters who are concentrating on their businesses rather than pagerank:

If you are interested in joining in on the fun, check out Dean’s blog for all the details on how to do just that.
