HP Investigator Charged with Identity Theft
According to Network World, an independent investigator is facing Federal charges of conspiracy and aggravated identity theft stemming from HP’s boardroom spy scandal last year. Bryan Wagner worked for HP trying to determine the source of board leaks.
It appears that Wagner helped obtain personal information of the members of Hewlett-Packard’s board as well as reporters. Wagner obtained the Social Security number of a reporter and used it to establish an online account which allowed him to get copies of the reporter’s phone records. Tsk, tsk!
If convicted, Wagner faces some pretty hefty prison-time. The conspiracy charge could cost him five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charge of aggravated identity theft (I think any identity theft would be aggravating) could be worth two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
