It appears that Robert Soloway will have to sit in jail until his August 6 trial begins. The judge pointed out that Soloway could easily start spamming from a location in Sweden, where he has family ties, so “no bail for you” (quotes are mine).

Soloway was arrested May 30 on charges including money laundering, mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and wire fraud. He could get up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The Spamhaus Project, a spam monitoring organization, says that Soloway is one of roughly 135 spammers responsible for about 80 percent of spam e-mail. I am not sure if there has been a big drop in spam since his arrest, but he allegedly sent tens of millions of e-mails and sold software allowing buyers to send tens of millions more on their own. So, at least his operation has been shut down. However, I am sure that someone else will take his place.
