MySql 5.1 Release Premature? »
After a year of testing, Sun Microsystems announced in April that that MySql 5.1 was ready for GA release. That was great news because it would be offering lots of new features and Open Source products are always priced right
.
However, MySql’s original author, Michael “Monty” Widenius says that release by Sun was premature. On his blog, he recommends treating the new features of MySQL 5.1 as BETA and to make sure that you test them thoroughly before placing into production.
He says there are 20 verified critical bugs in 5.1 that remain unaddressed and possibly as many as 35. There are also more than 300 less critical bugs that are on the “to-do” list, but have no fix timetable.
He also documents several bugs, which could lead to database instability:
- There is a bug that could cause an error when one is upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1 and a table in the database contains triggers – documented here
Check out his blog and you will see a TON more documented bugs.
So why would Sun release something as GA when it should have gone through some additional testing, perhaps? Monty says:
The reason MySQL 5.1 was declared RC was not because we thought it was close to being GA, but because the MySQL manager in charge *wanted to get more people testing MySQL 5.1*.
Monty’s post is very candid and normally those types of discussions would be held behind closed doors, but such is the way of Open Source. It is very… open.
So use MySQL 5.1, but be informed before you decide to upgrade and you should definately test it completely before you put it into production.
New Web Design Projects Ahead »
Wow! It has been FOREVER since I updated anyone on our upcoming projects. You might have thought we had nothing to do – haha. The guys will certainly tell you differently. Here are a few things that we have cooking:
We have started several new web design projects. For example, we are working on a new web design for Ward Shore Realty in Swansboro, NC. Ashley Melton’s current web site has served him well and he wanted to update the look to freshen it up. So, we are doing a complete redesign taking SEO into account as well.
We also are creating two new web sites for Jamie Kirkman. Jamie and his wife are the owners of Kirkman’s Signs and JL Kirkman Antique Mall in New Bern, NC. Jamie tried to do the web sites himself with the help of a family member. As happens many times with that type of arrangement, they bit off a little more than they could chew.
I am very flattered that he awarded us two different projects and welcome both he and his wife to the Crystal Coast Tech family.
Finally, we are putting the finishing touches on a new web site for Coastal Kennels. Tammy and her mom are breeders of top quality Shetland Sheepdogs and have many Show Champions to prove it. Naturally, we are glad to be able to work on her project and should have it wrapped up in the next few weeks.
Whew – that is a lot! And that is not even all we are working on. We have many other projects in the queue and will have more information on them soon. Plus, we recently put the finishing touches on a 3D rendering for a new project at Wake Forest University right here in North Carolina.
If you would like a professional web design that gets results in Search Engines, contact us and we will show you the ways we we can help you reach your Internet goals. Better yet – contact our clients and let them tell you how we helped them.
Web Design Completed »
We recently put the finishing touches on another web design for a North Carolina company: Coastal House Watch. They are a full-service, Emerald Isle NC property management company that takes care of everything from routine home maintenance to securing your house when a hurricane is heading our way. They will take pictures before and after the storm and will even meet your insurance adjuster if that is necessary. In addition, they can take care of the repairs once all the insurance paperwork is finalized.
Another service they offer comes in handy when you are on your way down to your beach house for your summer vacation. You simply give them your grocery list and they will take care of the shopping for you as well as make sure everything is stocked up in your home and the A/C is set just the way you like it. They really offer a great service.
If you have a property down here on the NC coast, you should contact them and see how they can help you out.
New Web Design Project »
We recently started work on several new web design projects. One of them is a new web site for a Chiropractic firm in Morehead City, NC.
A short time ago, Dr. Barnum of Barnum Chiropractic Center contacted us about developing a new site for his firm. His current web site had served him well for many years, but he wanted to make some changes and also wanted to work with a local web design company after his previous web designer moved to Texas.
We have been working on developing the new site layout and have it nailed down pretty much. Right now, it just shows some stock photography until Dr. Barnum’s staff gets the actual pictures that they want to use. So, we are working on the content gathering process so we can begin on the interior pages as well as getting the pictures together which will be used on the Flash banner on the home page. The Flash will dress up the site a little more and provide something to grab visitor’s interest – we only have about 4 seconds to grab the web site visitor’s attention.
Stay tuned for the latest and we will post it when it is completed for everyone to see.
New Web Site Launched »
We are pleased to announce the launch of our latest creation: Dive Aventuras is a scuba dive shop located in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico. Completion of their site represents two “firsts” for Crystal Coast Technologies, Inc.:
- It is our first dive shop web site. We are located on the North Carolina coast and there are quite a few local diving businesses, so we are excited that we got to create a site in that business category.
- It is also our first International web site. Since Dive Aventuras is located in Mexico, we are really excited to have them as our first foreign country client.
Dive Aventuras wanted a web site that they could update on their own, so we created a custom CMS to control all their content and allow them to upload pictures and change text whenever they want. With clients from all over the world, they wanted their site to have an updated look to really showcase the awesome service that they offer. Click on the graphic above and check out the site for yourself.
We want to thank Karen for giving us the opportunity to create such an important feature of their business and welcome her and the Dive Aventuras team to the CCT family

Faststone Screen Capture is an absolute "can't do without" piece of software. Capture screenshots in a fixed window or with the scrolling window feature. It even has a screen color-picker that will tell you the code for any color that is displayed on your screen. Love it. Oh, its free too!
