Search Engine Marketing Exploding

A report from SEMPO (Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization) states that last year, North American advertisers spent $9.4 billion on SEM (Search Engine Marketing). That figure represents a 63% increase over the 2005 totals. Because of the popularity of Internet advertising, it is estimated that the amount spent per year will nearly double by 2011. What will that mean for your web site?

The main objective of Search Engine Marketing is to get the word out about your web site. By the time you start down that path, you should have already optimized your web site for the search engines (SEO), but the two disciplines are closely related and should work together.

Basically, you want to put your web site in front of as many eyes as possible. This could be by paying for advertising space on other popular web sites or paying to be included in a high-quality directory; writing a few articles related to your industry and including links to your web site in those articles or even using PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaigns to advertise your web site.

This entire process is not mastered by all web design companies, but it is not always as hard as some would have you believe. Having said that, you must be aware of its overall importance to the success of your web site AND you must make sure that you get the process done correctly.

What does all this mean? It means that it will (is) no longer be acceptable to simply have a web presence. You need not only a high-quality web site but you also need to incorporate SEO principles into the design of that site and you need a great SEM strategy to put that site in front of as many eyes as possible. If your web site does not outrank your competition, you could get lost in the shuffle.
