Symantec Internet Security Threat Report

October 2, 2007

symantec.jpgSymantec released their Internet Security Threat Report covering the first half of 2007 and there were some disturbing findings on the Internet Security front:

  • During the first half of 2007, there were 52,771 bot-infected computers per day.
  • Symantec detected nearly 200,000 unique phishing messages, which is an increase of 18% over July-December 2006 figures
  • One can purchase a full set of stolen identity information for $10 to $150 on the black market
  • If one just wants a stolen credit card number, one can pick those up for $0.50 to $5 on the black market

I am not a big Symantec fan simply because I think their products hog system resources and are a hassle to remove if one decides to switch to a different Internet Security vendor. However, they are the best in the business at compiling the data they receive from their customer’s computers into reports that help all of us examine the status of our online security.
