One of the things that impacts a new business is all of the legal steps that have to be taken (or should be taken ;)) to protect its interests. A new business working on a tight budget might not have the financial ability to pay for everything right away and so some things may have to sit off to the side until the budget it there.
In this example, we will take the trademark process. Every business should take steps to protect its branding. However, a small business could easily spend thousands of dollars for a lawyer to do all the trademark research and file the necessary forms. But this is something that an entrepreneur could roll up their sleeves and do on their own.
You can complete all of the steps online right through the US Government’s web site. If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry, they have even provided a handy little tutorial that will walk you through the process.
In the end, going this route will cost you a few hours of time and $300. But, that seems like a small price to pay for trademark protection.
