Microsoft Patch Tuesday for October

October 6, 2006

Microsoft will issue 11 security bulletins on October 10 as part of October’s Patch Tuesday. The release is broken down like this:

  • Six updates for Windows (one of them being “critical”)
  • Four patches for Microsoft Office (also some “critical”)
  • One fix is geared to the .NET Framework.

One likely patch will be for the WebViewFolderIcon ActiveX control problem. There is an exploit circulating that could allow an attacker access to the same permissions as a local user. Translation: Someone in another country could play on your computer without your permission or knowledge.

Last month, Microsoft released an emergency patch for the VML problem but has waited to patch the WebViewFolderIcon flaw because there were not any reports of attacks taking place.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday updates for October can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Web site Tuesday October 9th at approximately 1 p.m. EDT. If you have set your computer to automatically updates, those updates should begins shortly after that time.
