One Laptop Per Child

November 29, 2006

Most readers have heard about the One Laptop Per Child project. The goal of the project is to provide laptop computers to needy children the world over. The laptop computers (Linux based :)) are ready to go right out of the box as they have their own power supplies and the keyboards are specific to the language of the particular country (they even come with a 90 day trial of Office 2007).

Fedora Core developer and OLPC project member Chris Blizzard gave everyone an update via his blog:

Today we received the first large shipment of laptops from the factory…I’m told it’s about a thousand pounds. The boxes are all labeled with the countries the keyboards are built for: The U.S., Nigeria, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil and Libya.

You can read the entire story on his blog where he goes into more detail about the reasons Thailand is not accepting these laptops: First OLPC Linux laptops arrive from factory

Overall, that is a nice “feel-good” story for a Wednesday!
