Sun Microsystems Creating Portable Datacenter

February 24, 2007

project blackbox sun microsystemsSun Microsystems has constructed a portable datacenter called Project Blackbox and they are calling it the first virtualized datacenter.

This is a pretty cool creation. Project Blackbox can support 10,000 desktop computers with no administrator and can be located almost anywhere because it is all housed in a 20-foot shipping container. It has 208-volt three-phase AC power, GPS and Ethernet networking. Also included, shock-tolerant server racks that will provide thousands of processor cores, 7TB of memory and over 2PB (that is Petabytes) of storage space. Plus an integrated cooling system.

This is perfect for use in a disaster-struck area or an extremely remote location. No word on cost or availability. Check out Sun Microsystems’ web site for all the details.
