New Google Spreadsheet from Google Labs

June 7, 2006

Here are a few quick musings about this latest offering from Google:

The Good

  • Free! (always nice)
  • Imports from Excel fairly well (some things did not quite make it, but maybe they will fix that in future releases)
  • Very easy to use
  • Ability for multiple people to view the same sheet and chat about it (online collaboration very easy)
  • Quite a few functions (but not print function and missing conditional formatting 🙁 )

The Bad

  • No pivot table ability (couldn’t find it anyway)
  • No right-mouse capabilities (sigh)
  • No charts and graphs
  • Chat and collaboration could be messy

Overall, it is certainly worth the price (did I mention it is free). However, open Office is also free and offers quite a bit more with the “Excel-like” Calc spreadsheet program. Anyway, stay tuned as we look a little deeper into this.
